Lip-Reading Competition - Sep & Oct 2008 Print
Each year the national board of Better Hearing Australia arranges for a Lip-Reading Competition to be devised by one of the branches and invites members from all branches to participate in it. It is by no means compulsory but many members take the opportunity to test their lipreading skills and prizes are awarded for the best performances at the Annual Conference.

The competition these days consists of a Video or CD presented to the participants based on a nominated topic which is fairly familiar to all. This is introduced by the “narrator” followed by a series of 20 or so competition sentences. The first half of each of these is spoken audibly, but the remainder is silent with only the lip movements – viewed front-on then in profile - available to the competitors. The latter are given time to complete the missing words for the unspoken parts of the sentences before the presentation continues.

Papers from all over the country are marked and then go through a standardisation process before the results are announced.

Normally a branch conducts the competition annually for several years before handing on the responsibility. Sydney branch produced the lip-reading video/CD this year which was reported by participating branches to be interesting and rather testing. Some shortcomings were reported such as stiffness in facial expression and as we are to repeat the preparation in 2009 these comments will be taken into account.
