At the Epping Club around 120 guests gathered together over an excellent luncheon to celebrate this unique occasion in high style on June 23, 2006. The tables were beautifully decorated, each guest having, as well as a collectible menu and program, a crafted bookmark and a 4-page history of the branch entitled '70 Years of Service to the Hearing Impaired' plus listings of past patrons, presidents and clear-speech awardees over 40 years.
The toast to Better Hearing was proposed by Mr.John Berryman, CEO for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children, whose organisation contributed to the beginnings of Better Hearing in Sydney in 1936 - at that time named the “N.S.W. Lipreaders League”. The presentation of the '2006 Clear Speech Award' was made to Juanita Phillips of Channel 2 by James Dibble ex-newsreader of Channel 2, who was the first winner in 1967. Juanita acknowledged that it was nice to see five of the other newsreaders from different channels that had won the award over the years and specially struck medallions were presented to these. Michelle Lampert was presented with her Teaching Certificate by Roma Wood OAM (Co-ordinator of Teachers) and Ross Symonds. Both Michelle and Ross spoke well of the challenges of hearing loss and the help now available from BHA in many ways.
